About this position

University of Copenhagen is advertising an externally funded three-year PhD fellowship in Time-Resolved Crystallography of Enzymes (STRIDE project) at the Department of Chemistry, Biological Chemistry section, Faculty of SCIENCE.

The project sits at the intersection of structural enzymology, macromolecular crystallography, biochemistry, chemistry, and structural biology. It focuses on time-resolved serial-synchrotron crystallography (TR-SSX) at the MicroMAX beamline (MAX IV Laboratory) to study esterases, especially bacterial glucuronoyl esterases involved in plant biomass degradation and relevant to industrial biotechnology and drug development.

The PhD student will be based at UCPH and supervised by Prof. Leila Lo Leggio. The work includes synthesis and evaluation of novel substrate analogues, static single-crystal and serial-synchrotron crystallography, and progression to time-resolved SSX experiments. The project also involves collaboration with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology, including research stays of a few weeks to a few months.

Funding: externally funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation as a MicroMAX Collaborative Research Grant. The position is full-time for up to 3 years under the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme).

Eligibility highlights: a degree equivalent to a Danish master's degree is required. Macromolecular crystallography experience is essential. Experience with enzyme activity/kinetics assays is highly desirable. Organic synthesis is an advantage but not mandatory. Applicants should have a strong experimental background, relevant publications/manuscripts if available, and good language skills.
