About this position

IMT Nord Europe is advertising a PhD position on transforming excavated soil into resources for low-carbon concrete. The doctoral project is based at IMT Nord Europe in Douai, France, with research also carried out in the laboratories of ESTP – Institut de Recherche de la Construction (IRC), Cachan and LGCgE – IMT Nord Europe.

The research focuses on the physico-chemical compatibility between excavated soils, other secondary construction resources (such as recycled aggregates, fines, sands, gravels, and inert construction waste), low-carbon cements, mineral additions, and admixture systems. The project aims to understand how these materials interact and how they affect water demand, rheology, workability stability, hydration kinetics, setting, mechanical strength, and durability.

The thesis is strongly experimental and includes representative characterization of multiple soil and secondary-resource sources, study of interactions with cementitious binders and superplasticizers, and development of rapid, robust, operational methods to assess compatibility for formulation. The expected outcome is a methodology and technical recommendations to support the industrial deployment of excavated soils in low-carbon concrete and circular construction.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master 2 or engineering degree in civil engineering, geomechanics, geomaterials, or a related field; prior experimental research experience is required; and a strong interest in construction materials and laboratory work is expected.
