About this position

PhD opportunity in benthic marine cyanobacterial blooms and toxin production at Lincoln University and Cawthron Institute, New Zealand.

This project investigates the ecology, drivers, persistence, detachment, and toxin dynamics of benthic marine cyanobacterial blooms in coastal environments, with a particular focus on Waiheke Island and the wider Auckland region. The research combines field surveys and laboratory experiments to understand how these blooms form, persist, detach, and produce toxins, and why they are becoming an increasing issue in Aotearoa New Zealand and coastal systems worldwide.

The project is supervised by Prof. Susie Wood (Lincoln University) together with Dr. Laura Biessy and Dr. Kirsty Smith at the Cawthron Institute, with close links to Auckland Council. The student will be primarily based at the Cawthron Institute in Nelson, New Zealand.

Ideal applicants will have a Bachelor (Honours) degree or Master's degree in a relevant field, with a background in marine ecology, algal culturing, environmental science, molecular and/or chemical analytical techniques, and quantitative data analysis (e.g. R). Strong English communication skills and the ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams are also important.

Funding includes NZ$35,000 per annum plus full tuition fees. International applicants with a strong academic record are encouraged to apply.

To express interest, use the FindAPhD enquiry/register-interest form on the project page and submit your details and questions. The university will respond directly.
