About this position

University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) is recruiting a PhD physician-researcher in vascular neurology with a strong focus on cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), brain hemorrhage, biomarkers, advanced MRI, clinical epidemiology, and translational research. The project is part of Prof. Dr. Marieke Wermer’s Vici-funded research line and involves collaboration with Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Radboudumc, and international partners in London and beyond.

The successful candidate will help build a clinical and biobank cohort of CAA patients, contribute to a national case-control study on risk factors, study iatrogenic CAA, describe neuropathological findings from autopsies, and compare radiological features using existing 3T and 7T MRI data. The role combines patient care with research and includes patient inclusion, outpatient supervision, data collection and analysis, and publication of scientific articles forming the basis of the PhD.

Requirements include a completed medical degree, registration as a doctor in the Netherlands, excellent Dutch, good Dutch and English communication skills, teamwork, responsibility, coordination ability, and a proactive, pragmatic attitude. The position is full-time (36 hours/week) and initially offered for one year, with extension possible to a total PhD trajectory of 3 years and 9 months. Salary is up to €5,867 gross per month (scale 10), plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus.

Apply only through the digital application form on the vacancy page by 1 September 2026. Questions about the role can be directed to Prof. Dr. Marieke Wermer at [email protected].
