About this position

PhD opportunity in Visual Abstraction and Composition for Complex Data Understanding at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), School of Advanced Technology, in Suzhou, China.

This funded doctoral project focuses on AI-assisted visual abstraction, visualization composition, complex data understanding, machine learning, deep learning, large language models, human-computer interaction, and data analysis. The research aims to automatically distill heterogeneous, high-dimensional data into expressive visual forms and combine multiple visualizations into coherent representations that reduce cognitive load and improve insight.

Students will develop AI-assisted visualization methods, build interactive prototypes, and conduct user studies. Expected outcomes include frameworks, algorithms, and design principles connecting machine reasoning with human cognition.

Supervisors: Dr. Lingyun Yu (principal supervisor), Dr. Yu Liu, and Dr. Guangliang Cheng.

Funding: three-year funded PhD studentship covering tuition fees and offering up to RMB 16,500 for conference participation. Research is mainly based at XJTLU in Suzhou, with a possible short-term visit to the University of Liverpool.

Eligibility: Master’s degree with Merit and a Bachelor’s degree with first-class or upper second-class honors are required; exceptional Bachelor’s-only candidates may be considered. IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required for non-native English speakers.
