About this position

PhD opportunity at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany, within the ERC Synergy project ROTTnROCK. The project focuses on volcanology, remote sensing, geohazards, hydrothermal alteration, and volcano deformation hazards.

The doctoral researcher will investigate how volcano deformation and hydrothermal alteration shape volcanic hazards. Research tasks include analysing satellite data (SAR, InSAR, hyperspectral, tri-stereo), using drones to build high-resolution 3D/4D digital twins of active volcanoes, developing fault and mineral mapping approaches, and conducting field expeditions to remote active volcanoes. The role also involves collaboration with experts in rock mechanics, petrology, and numerical modelling.

This is a fully funded 36-month position at salary group TVöD Bund E13, part-time 75% (29.25 h/week). Funding includes support for fieldwork, conferences, workshops, publication charges, computing resources, and access to advanced facilities in an international research environment.

Applicants should have an MSc in Earth Science or a related discipline such as Geophysics, Geology, or Geography, with strong remote sensing and data analysis skills. Experience with active and passive remote sensing, volcanology, fieldwork in challenging environments, and a car driving and drone flying license are required. Experience in 3D reconstruction, structure-from-motion, point cloud analysis, and machine learning is desirable.

The call is open now and will be filled as soon as possible. The stated application deadline is 9 August 2026. Apply through the GFZ online application form and include a CV, motivation letter, and certificates/grades.
