About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Sheffield within the NERC-funded ECOSOLUTIONS Doctoral Focal Award.

This project, supervised by Dr Ellie Harrison with Prof Jason Snape, Dr Amanda Porter, Prof Laura Carter, and Dr Ed Haynes, investigates the interactions between wastewater irrigation, pesticides, and the fate of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in agricultural fields. The research is interdisciplinary, linking microbiology, environmental chemistry, soil science, ecology, and policy-relevant environmental research.

The project will compare irrigation sources such as river water, grey water, and sewage effluent; examine how contaminants persist in soil and potentially leach to groundwater; use tomato mesocosms to study impacts on microbial communities and AMR in soil, fruit, and groundwater; test pesticide effects on AMR abundance and resistance; and evaluate mitigation strategies such as pesticide-degrading bacteria.

This is a fully funded PhD for 45 months, covering tuition and providing a stipend at UKRI rates. The programme also includes training, workshops, a secondment with Defra/Fera, and conference opportunities.

Applicants should have at least an upper second-class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, plus laboratory skills and data analysis and/or modelling. The project is open to students worldwide, although some funding restrictions apply for international applicants.

The deadline shown on the listing is 30 November 2026. For application guidance, visit the ECOSOLUTIONS website and contact [email protected] for project-specific enquiries.
