About this position
Doctoral Student / Research Associate in Agentic Modernization of Legacy Enterprise Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), with work linked to the Heilbronn Campus and located in Ingolstadt.
This PhD opening focuses on computer science, software engineering, program analysis, software testing, reverse engineering, and agentic AI for modernizing large legacy enterprise systems. The project asks how specifications can be recovered from code, tests, configuration, runtime traces, and tribal knowledge; how deterministic analysis and LLM-based agents can be combined; how traceability and auditability can be preserved; and how verification and governance can make modernization acceptable in regulated environments.
The successful candidate will work closely with Prof. Dr. Chunyang Chen and contribute to ongoing research on spec-driven, traceable, and verifiable modernization of real enterprise systems. The post emphasizes scientific evaluation, including benchmarks, baselines, ablations, and failure-mode analysis, as well as practical relevance through industrial cooperation and access to production legacy systems and enterprise experts.
Eligibility highlights: a very good Master's degree in computer science, software engineering, AI, or a closely related field; strong programming and debugging skills; familiarity with version control, automated testing, and build systems; interest in legacy modernization and AI-assisted software development; and good English skills. Experience with COBOL, mainframes, transaction processing, or enterprise applications is a plus.
Funding: funded for three years, salary according to TV-L E13 (100%).
