PhD Opportunities in Emerging Pathogen Research, Immunology, and Tissue Engineering The Pandemic Institute in United Kingdom

Three fully funded PhD opportunities are available in emerging pathogen research, with a strong focus on biological security, immunology, tissue engineering, and pandemic preparedness. The projects are based in Liverpool and are led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the University of Liverpool, as part of an Integrated Health Security Cohort.

The three research themes are:

1) T Cell Diagnostics — developing advanced cellular assays to detect exposure to high-consequence viral haemorrhagic fevers.

2) Innate Immune Programming — using computational biology to programme host resilience against future pandemic strains.

3) Automated human lung organoids — engineering human microphysiological systems to rapidly screen countermeasures against aerosol-transmitted pathogens.

These projects sit at the intersection of biology, medical science, biomedical engineering, computer science, and public health. They are designed for researchers interested in next-generation viral threats, outbreak evaluation, and health protection research.

Funding: fully funded PhD studentships, with support from Dstl and the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit. No stipend amount is stated in the post.
