About this position
PhD opportunities are available in Optical Wireless Communications at McMaster University in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, working with Dr. Steve Hranilovic and the Free-space Optical Communication Algorithms Laboratory (FOCAL).
The group develops theory, algorithms, and experiments for optical bands used in wireless communications and localization. Research areas include space optical communications, indoor visible light communications and localization, free-space optics (including hybrid RF/FSO and non-terrestrial optical networks), and underwater optical communications.
Funding is available for four years for PhD students. The post indicates that doctoral applications are preferred and will be filled as soon as possible, with possible start dates in January 2027 or September 2027.
Ideal applicants may have a strong background in communication algorithm design, information theory, experimental prototype design, physical optics, statistical optics, and/or turbulence modelling. A strong publication record in top-ranked journals is highlighted for some projects. Applicants should also be comfortable working in a team environment.
