About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Caen Normandy, France in the ABTE laboratory, EcoTEA team, on foam-flow cleaning in milking systems.
The project, called FOAMAT, focuses on improving cleaning performance while reducing water, energy, and detergent use. The research combines foam physical chemistry, fluid mechanics, process engineering, rheology, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to understand how foam formulation, structure, and flow conditions affect the removal of dairy residues and biofilms.
The work will include foam formulation and characterization, experimental investigation of foam flows and cleaning mechanisms in different geometries, and CFD modelling with pilot-scale validation. The project brings together Université de Caen Normandie, Actalia Sécurité des aliments, Institut de l'Elevage (idele), with industrial support from Kersia and input from CNIEL.
This is a 36-month PhD position with an expected start in January 2027. The post is located in Caen, France, at the ABTE laboratory, University of Caen Normandy. The candidate should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in process engineering, fluid mechanics, physical chemistry, or a related field. Strong interest in experimental research and quantitative analysis is essential; experience in rheology or numerical simulation is an asset.
The project is funded through CASDAR’s 2026 Connaissances call, administered by FranceAgriMer. Applications are due by 1 December 2026. Interested candidates should email their application to Heni Dallagi and Piyush Kumar Jha, and consult the attached PDF for the full project description and application requirements.
