About this position

Leiden University and Lund University are offering a funded 4-year PhD position on Analysis of Inhomogeneous Wave Equations. The project sits at the interface of analysis, dynamical systems, and partial differential equations, with a particular focus on nonlinear wave equations with spatial inhomogeneities. The successful candidate will study the behaviour of travelling waves and other coherent wave structures using tools from functional analysis and dynamical systems.

This is a joint doctoral project with supervision by Gianne Derks at Leiden University and Sara Maad Sasane at Lund University. The position is embedded in the Analysis and Dynamical Systems group in Leiden and the Partial Differential Equations group in Lund, offering access to a strong research environment, seminars, and collaboration across two universities. The project leads to two paired PhD diplomas, one from Leiden University and one from Lund University.

The appointment begins in Leiden, continues after one year in Lund for two years, and concludes with a final year in Leiden. The contract is initially for one year and may be extended following positive evaluation. Funding includes a monthly salary in Leiden from €3,059 in the first year to €3,881 in the fourth year, and in Lund from SEK 35,300 to SEK 38,800 per month for the middle two years. Additional support is available for travel to international conferences and workshops.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in mathematics or equivalent and have a solid background in analysis, dynamical systems, and differential equations. Strong written and oral English proficiency is required. To apply, submit a CV, a completed application form in place of a cover letter, and transcripts of Bachelor’s and Master’s studies to date. Applications received before 15 September 2026 will be given full consideration.

This position is a strong fit for candidates interested in mathematical analysis, nonlinear waves, and PDE theory in a collaborative international setting across the Netherlands and Sweden.
