About this position
Leiden University and Lund University are offering a PhD position in the project Analysis of Inhomogeneous Wave Equations, supervised by Gianne Derks at Leiden University and Sara Maad Sasane at Lund University. The project sits within the Mathematical Institute at Leiden and the Centre for Mathematical Sciences at Lund, in research groups focused on analysis, dynamical systems, and partial differential equations.
The research topic concerns nonlinear wave equations with spatial inhomogeneities. The successful candidate will use tools from dynamical systems and functional analysis to study travelling waves and other coherent wave phenomena. The project is academically oriented and well embedded in active seminar and research environments in both Leiden and Lund, with opportunities to engage with local and national research communities.
This is a 4-year PhD employment leading to two PhD diplomas, one from Leiden University and one from Lund University. The appointment begins in Leiden, continues in Lund for two years, and ends with a final year in Leiden. The position is full-time and includes an initial one-year contract, with extension for the remaining three years subject to positive evaluation of progress and performance.
Funding is provided through salaried doctoral employment. In Leiden, the gross monthly salary ranges from €3,059 in the first year to €3,881 in the fourth year. During the middle two years in Lund, the gross monthly salary ranges from SEK 35,300 to SEK 38,800. Additional support is available for travel to conferences and workshops abroad. Both universities also mention broader benefits such as pension contributions, paid parental leave, and holiday bonuses.
Eligibility requirements include a Master’s degree in mathematics or an equivalent qualification, together with a strong background in analysis, dynamical systems, and differential equations. Applicants should also have good written and spoken English. The application package should contain only a CV, a completed application form (used in place of a cover letter), and transcripts of Bachelor and Master studies to date.
The application deadline is 15 September 2026, with full consideration guaranteed for applications received before that date. The project can start in autumn/winter 2026, with some flexibility in the start date.
