About this position

This PhD project at The University of Manchester focuses on characterising the air-sea exchange processes in realistic breaking waves, a critical aspect for understanding climate dynamics and the exchange of CO2 between the atmosphere and the ocean. The research aims to address inaccuracies in current estimates of gas exchange, particularly the influence of air bubble entrainment during wave breaking, which is essential for developing effective climate mitigation strategies.

As a doctoral researcher, you will quantitatively investigate the fluid kinematics at the air-water interface under realistic wave breakup conditions. The project employs advanced laser diagnostic tools such as Particle Image Velocimetry and Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence. Experiments will be conducted in state-of-the-art wave flumes at the University of Manchester’s Hydrodynamics Lab, providing hands-on experience with cutting-edge experimental facilities. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with scientists, engineers, experimentalists, and mathematicians both within the university and internationally.

Applicants should hold, or expect to achieve, at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline. The position is open to both UK and international students. Excellent candidates will be nominated for competence-based faculty funding, which covers tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26, with expected annual increases). The PhD duration is 4 years. Self-funded students are also encouraged to apply.
