About this position

This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on the development, design, and manufacturing of fabrication-tolerant spot size converters (SSCs) for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on the Indium Phosphide (InP) platform. The project addresses a fundamental challenge in photonics: efficiently coupling light between optical fibers and high-confinement waveguides on PICs, which is crucial for minimizing interface losses and advancing packaging solutions.

The research will involve exploring and designing novel SSC concepts, such as lateral and vertical tapers or multi-layer transitions, to optimize mode matching, polarization dependency, bandwidth, and fabrication tolerance. You will develop and optimize manufacturing processes for SSCs in the Nanolab cleanroom, characterize the fabricated components, and establish robust methodologies to feed experimental characterization results back into the design and layout flow. A key aspect of the project is creating compact modeling methods that incorporate experimental data, enabling the extension of process design kits (PDKs) with highly accurate, data-driven building blocks.

As a member of the Photonic Integration Group, you will collaborate closely with process engineering, PDK development, and PIC design teams, as well as expert partners at the Photonic Integration Technology Centre (PITC), JePPIX, and PIXEurope. The role contributes directly to the advancement of the JePPIX Pilot Line and PIXEurope initiative, supporting Europe’s photonics ecosystem and ensuring the European design community remains at the forefront of global photonics technology.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field, with experience in photonic integrated circuits, optical device design, or nanofabrication. Strong analytical skills, proficiency in simulation and experimental characterization, and the ability to work collaboratively are essential. English language proficiency is expected.

Funding details are not specified in the position description. The application process is online via AcademicTransfer, and candidates should prepare a CV, motivation letter, and academic transcripts. For further information, contact the Photonic Integration Group at Eindhoven University of Technology.
