About this position
This PhD position at Utrecht University focuses on improving immunity in neonatal piglets through the project “Betere Afweer voor Betere biggEn” (BABE). The research aims to bridge fundamental immunology and practical applications in the swine industry, targeting the health and welfare of newborn piglets whose survival and long-term vitality depend on early immune system development.
The project combines both fundamental and applied research, centering on two main pillars: optimizing colostrum quality via maternal (sow) nutrition and evaluating early-life vaccination strategies. As a PhD candidate, you will design and execute research involving laboratory work and animal studies. Key tasks include developing assays to characterize colostrum and milk composition, performing immunological assays, implementing nutritional and vaccination interventions, and conducting advanced data analysis (including omics datasets).
You will set up and coordinate animal studies, collect samples, process and analyze complex datasets, write scientific publications, and present results at national and international conferences. The project is a public-private partnership, and you will work in a multidisciplinary team with researchers from Utrecht University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (division Farm Animal Health and division Infectious Diseases and Immunology), Wageningen BioVeterinary Research, and two major industrial partners. Your primary workplace will be at Utrecht University, with some activities at Wageningen BioVeterinary Research in Lelystad and at industrial partner locations.
As a PhD student, you will be enrolled in the Utrecht Graduate School of Life Sciences, receiving training and guidance for research and professional development. Opportunities exist to co-supervise Master’s students and participate in teaching. The position offers a one-year contract with the possibility of extension to four years based on a positive assessment. Employment includes a permanent contract, a working week of 36–40 hours, a gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881 (full-time), 8% holiday pay, and an 8.3% year-end bonus. Utrecht University provides additional schemes for professional development, leave, sports, and cultural activities, with flexible employment conditions.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Life Sciences (e.g., Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Infection and Immunity), have experience or interest in immunology and at least one of the following: swine industry, nutrition, or data analysis. Effective English communication skills are required, along with flexibility to work in different locations and a valid Category B driver’s license. The university values diversity and strives for an inclusive environment.
To apply, submit your CV and a letter of motivation via the Utrecht University job portal by 27 May 2026. Interviews will take place at the end of June or beginning of July. For further information, contact Dr. Lindert Benedictus. This position provides an excellent foundation for an independent academic career in veterinary science, immunology, and animal health.
