PhD in Improving Immunity in Neonatal Piglets at Utrecht University

Utrecht University is advertising a fully funded PhD position in Improving Immunity in Neonatal Piglets within the BABE project (“Betere Afweer voor Betere biggEn”). The project sits at the intersection of veterinary science , biology , immunology , nutrition , and public health , with a strong applied focus on animal welfare and sustainable livestock production. The research aims to improve the survival, vitality, and long-term health of newborn piglets by strengthening early immune development. The project has two main research pillars: optimizing colostrum quality through maternal (sow) nutrition, and evaluating early-life vaccination strategies. The work combines fundamental science with practical industry relevance and is carried out in a public-private partnership. As a PhD candidate, you will set up and coordinate animal studies, collect samples, develop and perform immunological assays, analyze complex omics datasets, and contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations. There are also opportunities to co-supervise Master’s students and participate in teaching. The project involves collaboration between Utrecht University, Wageningen BioVeterinary Research, and industrial partners. Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in Life Sciences such as Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, or Infection and Immunity; interest or experience in immunology plus swine industry, nutrition, or data analysis; strong English communication skills; flexibility to work across multiple sites; and a valid Category B driver’s license. The position is based primarily at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University, with some work at Wageningen BioVeterinary Research in Lelystad and partner locations. The appointment is for one year initially, with the possibility of extension to a total of four years after a positive go/no-go assessment. The salary is €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month for full-time work, plus holiday pay and year-end bonus. The application deadline is 27 May 2026 .
