About this position

Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) offers a PhD position in the Department of Computer Science (DIDA), as part of the national research project "Human-Centered Intelligent Realities (HINTS)". The project is externally funded by the Knowledge Foundation and involves collaboration with seven industrial partners. The research focuses on developing adaptive and distributed AI models for intelligent environments, aiming to advance immersive, user-aware, and smart interactive digital systems.

The PhD student will primarily contribute to Research Theme D: Adaptive and Distributed AI for Intelligent Realities. The research involves creating AI models capable of representing real-world phenomena from multimodal observations (video, audio, sensor data), moving beyond conventional predictive and data-driven approaches. The goal is to capture causal, spatial, temporal, and semantic relationships for context-aware perception, reasoning, and decision-making. The project addresses limitations of single-source sensing and purely data-driven methods, targeting robustness, interpretability, and reliability in uncertain and noisy conditions. Key research directions include multimodal sensor fusion, uncertainty-aware learning, and distributed collaborative intelligence integrating heterogeneous data sources.

The doctoral student will collaborate with other research themes and industry partners, participate in research projects and third-cycle courses (minimum 80%), and may engage in teaching and departmental duties (maximum 20%). The position includes regular business trips to partner meetings and international conferences. The place of employment is Karlskrona, Sweden, with a preferred start date of 2026-09-15. The position is fixed-term for 2.5 years or until the licentiate degree is completed. Funding is secured for this period, with the possibility to continue towards a PhD if further funding is obtained after the licentiate degree.

Eligibility requires completion of an advanced degree in a technical, mathematical, or scientific field, or equivalent knowledge. Meritorious qualifications include a Master’s degree in computer science, AI, machine learning, or data science; proficiency in English; ability to work independently and in teams; strong knowledge in AI, machine learning, data science, mathematics; experience in IoT, data mining, cloud/edge/fog computing; and proficiency in C/C++ or Python. Applicants must submit a personal cover letter, CV, certified degree certificates and transcripts, a statement of relevant background and experience, contact information for two references, earliest start date, appendix with publications (if applicable), and a link to their thesis.

Applications are to be submitted online via the recruitment system. Instructions for applicants are available at BTH vacancies. The application deadline is 2026-08-15. BTH values diversity and encourages applicants from varied backgrounds. For questions regarding protected personal data, contact the HR Partner listed in the advertisement.
