About this position

PhD opportunity in Behavioral Toxicology at the University of Miami

The Environmental Psychology Innovation Center (EPIC) in the Biology Department at the University of Miami is recruiting a graduate student to begin in January or August 2027. The project is led by Dr. Delia Shelton and focuses on two research directions: (1) the molecular mechanisms underlying cadmium toxicity, and (2) the transgenerational impact of fire-related contaminants on firefighter health, including contaminant-induced pre- and post-zygotic barriers to reproduction.

Students with interests in behavioral toxicology, toxicology, genetics, animal behavior, environmental health, and molecular biology are encouraged to apply. Helpful technical experience includes RNA-seq, qRT-PCR, bisulfite sequencing, TUNEL staining, ELISAs, histopathology, ICP-MS, GC-MS, LC-MS, and oxidative stress assays.

The student will join a vibrant and inclusive research community and contribute to publications, grant proposals, animal husbandry, lab maintenance, and collaborative projects. The lab is supported by NIH funding and a generous startup package.

Funding includes teaching and research assistantships, a stipend of at least $4,000 per month, health benefits, and a tuition/fee waiver.

Applicants should have at least a bachelor's degree. Experience is not required, though relevant technical background is welcomed. Interested candidates should complete the EPIC Graduate Student Intake Form and email Dr. Delia Shelton with a single PDF containing a statement of interest, CV, and three references. The department deadline is 2026-12-01.

Location: Miami, Florida, USA.
