About this position

Umeå University, one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions, is renowned for its world-leading research and dynamic academic environment. The Department of Chemistry is offering a fully funded PhD position specializing in inorganic chemistry, focusing on radiation-induced processes at oxide–water interfaces. This project is part of a collaborative effort with KTH Royal Institute of Technology and is funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet).

The research centers on understanding how ionizing radiation affects water-metal oxide interfaces throughout the nuclear fuel cycle, from reprocessing to final disposal. The formation of free radicals and reactive molecules during radiolysis can influence corrosion rates, radionuclide release, and the properties of reactor and barrier materials used in deep geological repositories for spent nuclear fuel. The PhD student will employ advanced experimental techniques, including time-resolved and multimodal X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES, EXAFS) at synchrotron facilities such as MAXIV, alongside theoretical molecular modeling of these systems.

The position is based in the Molecular Geochemistry research group at the Department of Chemistry, Umeå University, and involves close collaboration with researchers and PhD students at KTH. The successful candidate will participate in research and postgraduate courses, with opportunities for teaching and departmental work (up to 20%). The employment is limited to four years full-time or up to five years with part-time teaching, and includes a competitive salary and comprehensive social benefits such as parental leave, holiday leave, and occupational health services.

Eligibility requirements include a second-cycle degree or at least 240 ECTS credits (with 60 ECTS at second-cycle level), and at least 90 ECTS credits in chemistry or a directly relevant subject (with 15 ECTS at second-cycle level within the specialization). Candidates must demonstrate good oral and written proficiency in English. Merits include advanced coursework in inorganic or physical chemistry, practical experience with spectroscopy or diffraction techniques (XAS, XRD, FTIR, XPS), molecular modeling (MD/MC, DFT), programming skills (Python, MATLAB), and familiarity with Linux/HPC systems. Collaborative skills, drive, independence, and relevant experience are also valued.
