About this position
PhD Position in Cloud-Native and AI-Native 6G Networks at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Science, within the MultiScale Networked Systems (MNS) group and the Informatics Institute.
This PhD project focuses on software-defined and programmable networking for next-generation 6G networks, with emphasis on cloud-native and AI-native Radio Access Networks (RAN). The research will investigate end-to-end programmable data planes, common abstraction layers for heterogeneous programmable hardware, multitenancy, modularity, network slicing, dynamic traffic engineering, and programmable radio resource management. The project is conducted in collaboration with Ericsson and is embedded in the Dutch Future Network Services (FNS) 6G flagship ecosystem.
Research interests and technical keywords include computer science, electrical engineering, programmable networking, Kubernetes, eBPF, P4, mobile network architectures, packet core, RAN, and network automation. The role includes developing proof-of-concepts, benchmarking performance, using a state-of-the-art testbed, publishing in international venues, collaborating with institutes and companies, and contributing to teaching and supervision.
Eligibility highlights: a completed or near-completion Master's degree in a relevant discipline; strong programming skills in Python and C/C++; cloud-native experience is an advantage; programmable networking experience is a plus; fluency in English and good presentation skills are required.
Funding and contract: temporary PhD employment for 4 years total (initial 18 months, then extension after satisfactory evaluation), 38 hours/week, with gross monthly salary from €3,059 to €3,881 plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. A 30% ruling may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
Application deadline: 15 November 2026. Apply online and include a CV, motivation letter, publication list, and two references with email addresses.
