About this position

PhD position in Complex Dynamical Systems at the University of Amsterdam, within the Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics and the Faculty of Science.

The project focuses on complex dynamical systems, especially measure-theoretic descriptions of chaotic behavior arising from iterating functions over the complex numbers. The research connects to complex analysis, dynamical systems, measure theory, number theory, and algebraic/complex geometry.

You will work under the supervision of Prof. Han Peters and be embedded in an active analysis group with other researchers in dynamical systems and ergodic theory, including Prof. Ale Jan Homburg and Dr. Maximilian Engel. The institute offers a collaborative environment with seminars, colloquia, and interaction with PhD students and postdocs.

This is a PhD opening (not a scholarship call). The position is 38 hours/week for 4 years, with an initial 18-month contract and extension after satisfactory evaluation. The gross monthly salary is €3,204–€4,051, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus. Conference travel funds are available.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in Mathematics or comparable, strong motivation for research, ability to work independently and in a team, professional English, willingness to learn Dutch, and programming/scientific software experience as a plus. Teaching one course per semester is expected for most semesters, and there may be opportunities to supervise bachelor and master students.

Application deadline: 16 September 2026. Apply online through the vacancy page and submit a CV with months, a motivation letter, and the names and email addresses of two referees.
