The University of Lucerne (Switzerland) is advertising a PhD position for the ERC-funded project TRACES (Terrorism, Race and Embodied Security), led by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ajil at the Zug Institute for Blockchain Research and the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences and Psychology.
The project examines counterterrorism policies and practices in Switzerland, Germany, and Belgium through a humanities and social-science lens. Research activities include quantitative and qualitative analysis of criminal and administrative case law, semi-structured interviews with practitioners, ethnographic interviews with affected individuals, focus groups with activists and civil society, and courtroom ethnography.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in the social sciences, ideally in security studies, criminology, anthropology, or sociology; strong interest in counterterrorism, violent extremism prevention, and radicalisation; autonomy in field research and academic writing; ability to work in an international research team; and proficiency in English, German and/or French. Basic knowledge of Arabic is considered an asset.
Funding and conditions: the position is a full-time 4-year employment under the conditions of the University of Lucerne, with the possibility of remote work. The post is part of an ERC-funded research project.
