About this position

PhD opportunity in Coupled Processes in Fractured Rock at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a joint research institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), located in Esporles, Spain.

This 4-year PhD project sits within the NetDyn project, focused on linking network structure to dynamics in the heterogeneous subsurface for green energy technologies. The research will address coupled geochemical and geomechanical interactions in fractured rock caused by fluid injection and extraction. The scientific aims are directly relevant to geothermal energy, geologic carbon storage, and subsurface energy storage, making it a strong fit for candidates interested in low-carbon geo-energy systems, subsurface flow processes, and rock mechanics.

The successful candidate will work in a collaborative, international research environment within IMEDEA’s Global Change Research Group. Supervision will be provided by Prof. Victor Vilarrasa and Dr. Iman Rahimzadeh Kivi. The post offers a gross annual salary of approximately €22,000.

Applicants should have a MSc in Engineering, Physics, Geoscience, or a related discipline. Strong knowledge of geomechanics and/or geotechnical engineering, geochemistry, and hydrogeology is expected. Experience in numerical modelling and programming will be appreciated, as will experience with experimental data processing and interpretation. Publications in international journals and conference participation are valued. An excellent level of English is required, along with strong communication and teamwork skills.

To apply, candidates should submit a CV, English certificate, cover letter explaining motivation and relevant experience, and the contact details of two referees. Applications should be emailed to Victor Vilarrasa and Iman Rahimzadeh Kivi by 31 October 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete practical exercises and attend an interview.
