PhD Position in Decolonising Reparations at Radboud University (Netherlands)
This PhD project asks what reparations for colonialism could look like, with a focus on the experiences and expectations of Indo and Indonesian communities affected by colonialism. The position is part of the NWO-funded project Decolonising Reparations: Transforming the Legacies of Colonialism, led by Dr Sanne Weber (Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science) with Dr Haley Swedlund as co-supervisor.
The research combines qualitative, participatory, and creative methods. The PhD candidate will conduct in-depth fieldwork, interviews with stakeholders, a vignette study in Indonesia, and co-produce multimedia outputs with participants. The project compares colonial reparations debates across cases and aims to contribute to reparative justice theory, decolonisation, and the study of historical injustice.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in political science or a related field such as conflict studies, anthropology, or development studies. Strong qualitative research skills are required, along with familiarity with Indonesia and willingness to spend several months doing fieldwork there. Excellent academic English is required; participatory or arts-based methods, local language skills, Dutch, and basic quantitative methods are desirable.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in political science or another relevant discipline such as conflict studies, anthropology, or development studies. They should have a strong substantive research interest in justice, including transitional, reparative, and social justice, historical and ongoing injustice, reparations and redress, decolonisation, and intersectionality. Training in qualitative research and analysis is required, with experience conducting fieldwork and analysing qualitative data, ideally related to the project theme. Familiarity with Indonesia is required through origin, community background, work/living experience, or extended stay, and candidates must be willing to conduct several months of fieldwork in Indonesia. Excellent written academic English is required. Experience with planning, initiative, organising events, and presenting work to wider audiences is expected. Desired: participatory and/or arts-based research methods, community-level work, Bahasa or another relevant local language, Dutch proficiency, and basic quantitative methods.
