About this position

ETH Zürich is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position in Early Earth Geochemistry and Habitability within the Experimental Planetology Group at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.

The project focuses on the geochemistry of Archean komatiites and their role in modulating the early Earth surface and atmosphere. Using state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques, the research aims to reconstruct how these rocks interacted with the Earth’s surface environment over time and to couple measured reaction rates and magnitudes with models of early climatic states. The topic sits at the interface of geochemistry, planetary sciences, mineralogy, and planetary atmospheres, with strong relevance to research on the origin and emergence of life.

The position is embedded in the NCCR Genesis research infrastructure, funded by SNSF, which brings together physicists, earth and planetary scientists, chemists, and biologists. The broader mission is to understand the conditions and mechanisms that allow life to emerge and to advance biosignature detection through innovative interdisciplinary research. The project benefits from a collaborative environment with external partners at the universities of Bern, Cambridge, Harvard, and IPGP.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or be close to completing one before the start date) in Earth and planetary sciences, with a specialization in geochemistry, planetary atmospheres, chemical thermodynamics, mineralogy, or a related field. Some laboratory and/or teaching duties are expected. The advertised remuneration follows the ETH Zürich internal rate for PhD students and starts at 53,500 CHF per annum.
