About this position
ETH Zurich is advertising a fully funded-style PhD opportunity in the Electrochemical Energy Systems Laboratory for a highly motivated student interested in electrocatalysis and operando electrochemical characterization. The project focuses on how electrolyte environments influence reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and product selectivity at electrochemical interfaces, with particular emphasis on the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and related electrocatalytic processes.
The research combines detailed electrochemical studies with advanced operando methods such as FTIR, DEMS, EQCM, GC, and, where appropriate, synchrotron-based characterization. The aim is to build mechanistic understanding of electrochemical interfaces and to develop new concepts for electrolyte-controlled electrocatalysis. This is a strong fit for applicants with interests in sustainable chemical manufacturing, electrochemical energy conversion, reaction mechanisms, and surface/interface science.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a closely related field. Prior experience in electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, operando or in situ characterization, and synchrotron techniques is helpful but not mandatory. The role is research-intensive and expects the student to design experiments, analyze data, collaborate within the group and internationally, present at conferences, and publish in leading journals.
The position is at ETH Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland, and is a full-time PhD role with a tentative starting date of July 15, 2026, or later by mutual agreement.
