About this position
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is advertising a PhD position in electrocatalysis at the Erlangen Center for Interface Research and Catalysis (ECRC), in the group of Dr. Olaf Brummel and Prof. Jörg Libuda.
The project focuses on electrochemical interfaces studied with in situ spectroscopy and microscopy. Methods include infrared (IR) spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, mass spectrometry, and standard electrochemical techniques. The research spans atomically defined model systems and technologically relevant materials, aiming to build a mechanistic understanding of electrocatalytic processes.
This is an interdisciplinary, international research environment with collaborations across the natural sciences and engineering. The Libuda Group works on surface science, electrocatalysis, photochemistry, and in situ/operando methodologies, with applications in energy conversion and storage, sustainable chemical production, and advanced materials.
Eligibility: applicants should hold, or expect to complete before the start date, a diploma or master's degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or chemical engineering. Experience with in situ or operando electrochemistry is helpful but not required.
Funding and conditions: the position is a full-time temporary PhD employment at FAU with salary according to TV-L or BayBesG plus an annual bonus. Additional benefits include structured doctoral programs, career development support, onboarding, training opportunities, and access to state-of-the-art laboratories and synchrotron collaborations.
Deadline: 2026-10-31. Location: Erlangen, Germany.
How to apply: submit your application online via the FAU portal and include your CV, publication list, referee contacts, and a summary of your research experience.
