About this position
PhD Position in Epidemiology/Digital Health: Digital Follow-up of post-Sepsis (UMZH Learn4Sepsis) at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.
This PhD project is embedded in Work Package 5 of the UMZH Learn4Sepsis program and focuses on designing and initiating a digital follow-up cohort for people after sepsis. The work combines epidemiology, digital health, biostatistics, machine learning, natural language processing, and data-driven patient-reported outcome research. The candidate will help co-design a minimal dataset and patient-reported outcomes, develop an adaptive survey with voice input options, and contribute to scalable longitudinal research on life after sepsis.
Research tasks include co-designing post-sepsis outcome measures, building conceptual and technical elements for the survey infrastructure, working with knowledge trees/ontologies and database systems, analyzing contextual and patient-reported outcome data, and developing prediction algorithms using classical statistics and machine learning. An optional component includes collection and analysis of wearable sensor data.
The position is based at the Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Prevention Institute, Department of Epidemiology, with methodological support in statistics and digital health and collaborations across the UMZH Learn4Sepsis network. The location is Zurich, Switzerland.
Eligibility highlights: a quantitative MSc or equivalent in Statistics, Machine Learning, Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, or a related field; strong interest in person-centered health research and digital health; willingness to engage with patients and clinicians; strong R/Python skills; experience or willingness to learn NLP; excellent English; German is an asset; and eligibility for Swiss-based PhD positions.
