About this position

PhD position in Event-based Dynamics for Latent Reasoning at Peter Grünberg Institute 15 (Neuromorphic Software Ecosystems), Forschungszentrum Jülich, with work location in Aachen, Germany. The project is part of the MSCA Doctoral Network ELEVATE and is co-supervised with partners at the University of Liège.

This PhD focuses on neuromorphic computing, event-driven learning, latent reasoning, machine learning, hardware co-design, and the exploration of dedicated hardware realizations for reasoning algorithms. The research aims to improve accuracy, latency, data efficiency, and energy consumption for complex algorithmic or cognitive tasks, with comparisons across hardware backends and conventional GPU-based deep neural networks.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in physics, electrical/electronic engineering, computer science, mathematics, or a related field; strong coding skills in neural networks and ML frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX; teamwork and collaboration ability; strong English communication skills. Knowledge of integrated circuit design and Cadence simulation is a plus. German language skills are not required.

Funding: the position is funded through Horizon Europe / MSCA, fixed for 3 years, and paid at 75% of TVöD-Bund E13 plus a special payment. The role includes an interdisciplinary environment, doctoral training, internships at the University of Liège and other ELEVATE partners, and participation in network meetings and retreats.

Deadline: 31 August 2026. Apply via the official recruiting portal using the application link provided.
