About this position

PhD position in evolutionary genomics at Nord University (Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Bodø, Norway).

This 3-year, 100% PhD project focuses on evolutionary genomics, vertebrate genome architecture, genome size variation, sequence composition, chromosome number/size, and the molecular processes that shape genome evolution. The work will use selected genome assemblies and large-scale whole-genome multiple sequence alignments prepared by the Vertebrate Genomes Project, with possible sequencing of key species and use of germ-line DNA / Oxford Nanopore Technologies data.

The project is international and involves collaboration with the Vertebrate Genomes Project, EMBL-EBI (Cambridge, UK), and scientists in Germany (Bonn University). The position is located in Bodø, Norway, and starts in January 2027 (flexible).

Eligibility highlights: a two-year master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. molecular biology, bioinformatics, physics, mathematics, computer science), good English skills, and normally a B average or better in both the degree and thesis. Strong candidates may have programming experience, genetics/meiosis knowledge, molecular biology experience, and statistics background. Applicants already holding a PhD are not eligible.

Funding: salaried PhD employment for 3 years, no teaching duties, annual salary NOK 565,000.

Application deadline: 31 August 2026. Apply electronically and upload the required documents, including a motivation letter, CV, diplomas, thesis, project description (3–5 pages), and references.
