About this position
PhD fellowship in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH) in Oslo, Norway.
The Department of Physical Performance is recruiting for a three- to four-year PhD position starting in September/October 2026 (four years if teaching 25%). The project focuses on biological sex differences in performance-limiting factors, durability, metabolism, fatigue development, and the influence of nutritional strategies in well-trained individuals and elite athletes in endurance sports.
The work will combine laboratory- and field-based studies. The PhD candidate will contribute to study design, participant recruitment, data collection, performance testing, indirect calorimetry, gas exchange measurements, metabolic measurements, muscle biopsy allocation and analysis, data analysis, and dissemination of findings. International collaboration and research exchange are possible.
Supervision will be provided by Associate Professor Øyvind Skattebo, Associate Professor Kristin Lundanes Jonvik, and Professor Jostein Hallén.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must be eligible for NIH’s doctoral program and hold a two-year master’s degree in Sport Sciences or equivalent with grade B or better. Experience with human studies, scientific writing, performance and cardiopulmonary exercise testing, indirect calorimetry, hemoglobin mass/blood volume measurement, and metabolic marker analysis is highly relevant. Good English skills, collaboration, independence, and the ability to work with complex datasets are important.
Funding: doctoral research fellow position code 1017 with a starting gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, plus pension/insurance benefits. The position is full-time and temporary.
