PhD Position in Experimental Physics for the DiMiNe Project (CERIC-ERIC) CERIC-ERIC in Italy

CERIC-ERIC, the Central European Consortium for Research Infrastructure, is offering a PhD position in Experimental Physics for the DiMiNe project. This opportunity is designed for candidates interested in advancing the use of carbon-based semiconductor radiation detectors, specifically diamond and silicon carbide (SiC), for neutron monitoring and spectroscopy applications. The DiMiNe project aims to demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of these detectors in mixed neutron-gamma fields and to develop new detection systems for a wide range of neutron energies.

The research will be conducted primarily at the accelerator facility of the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) in Zagreb, Croatia, managed by the Laboratory for Ion Beam Interactions, Experimental Physics Division. Additional experimental work will take place at the Budapest Neutron Center (BNC), a Hungarian partner facility within CERIC-ERIC. The project offers access to advanced analytical facilities and a multicultural research environment, supporting science and industry in materials, biomaterials, and nanotechnology.

Applicants must have a Master's or equivalent degree in physics with a GPA of at least 80% of the maximum possible, enabling direct enrolment to PhD studies. Essential qualifications include experience with experimental physics practices and methodologies, fluent English (minimum B2 level), and familiarity with Monte Carlo simulation software toolkits such as Geant4, MCNP, and FLUKA. Additional experience in solid state physics and radiation detectors is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate teamwork, creativity, independence, and initiative.
