About this position
PhD opportunity at TU Wien in experimental quantum physics, focused on hybrid quantum systems, superconducting circuits, cryogenic engineering, and materials science. The project is hosted at the Atominstitut and is part of a newly funded FWF project titled Intrinsic Losses in Hybrid Systems with Cryogenic Solids, in collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
The selected PhD researcher will work on the design and fabrication of superconducting resonators, experiments on hybrid devices at ultra-low temperatures, growth and characterization of cryogenic noble-gas crystals, investigation of microscopic loss mechanisms in superconducting quantum circuits, and comparison of experimental results with electromagnetic simulations. The role also includes publishing in international journals and presenting at conferences.
Eligibility: a Master’s degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Quantum Engineering, or a closely related field; strong motivation for laboratory-based experimental research; programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar); and excellent English communication skills. Experience in low-temperature physics, superconducting circuits, optics, microwave engineering, or nanofabrication is welcome but not mandatory.
Funding: fully funded position with a gross salary of €39,648 per year. The call is open to international applicants, and no Austrian/EU citizenship or pre-existing work/residence permit is required.
