About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Grid Stability Analysis of Renewable Electricity Systems. This opportunity is based in the Division of Electric Power Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering, with joint supervision from the Division of Energy Technology. The research project addresses the critical challenges of grid stability as the electricity system transitions to converter-dominated generation and high penetration of inverter-based resources. The project will focus on modelling large-scale power systems, stability analysis, and evaluating the capabilities of phasor-domain simulation tools in capturing converter-related phenomena.
The research environment at Chalmers is dynamic and interdisciplinary, with strong collaborations across international research groups, industries, and grid companies. The Division of Electric Power Engineering is renowned for its theoretical and experimental research in electric power technology, while the Division of Energy Technology specializes in sustainable energy systems and conversion technologies. The project is closely linked to large research initiatives such as Mistra Electrification and North European Power Perspectives, offering extensive opportunities for collaboration and impact.
As a doctoral student, you will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Electrical Engineering, develop scientific concepts, and communicate your research findings. The position includes teaching or other duties up to 20% of working hours, potentially extending the appointment to five years. Main research tasks involve modelling wind power plants and energy storage systems for stability analysis, as well as large-scale system modelling. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month (from May 2026), and you will enjoy full employee benefits, including access to Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Chalmers is committed to gender equality and diversity, offering Swedish language courses for international students.
Eligibility requires a Master’s degree in electric power engineering or energy system engineering, strong English communication skills, and relevant experience in electric power engineering or energy systems modelling. Additional experience in power system operation, control, stability, grid-connected converters, time domain simulation (RMS and EMT), and tools such as powerfactory, PSS/E, PSCAD, MATLAB/SIMULINK is advantageous. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files (CV, personal letter, motivation, thesis, transcripts) via the online application form. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The deadline for applications is June 17, 2026. For further information, contact Associate Professors Peiyuan Chen and Lisa Göransson, or Professor Filip Johnsson. Join Chalmers and contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy systems and future power grids in a world-class research environment.
