About this position

UNIS (University Centre in Svalbard) is advertising a PhD position in Ionospheric Physics in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway. The project sits within Arctic Geophysics and focuses on space physics, ionospheric physics, plasma physics, radar-based geophysics, and analysis of large scientific datasets.

The PhD is part of a larger 5-year Research Council of Norway-funded project in collaboration with the University of Oslo and the British Antarctic Survey. The research will use historical and new data from multiple SuperDARN radars and EISCAT radars to study mesoscale ionospheric flows, magnetic local time dependence, conductivity, electric fields, and auroral precipitation. The candidate is also expected to develop new analysis methods and test them on the Longyearbyen SuperDARN radar.

This is a 3-year position with no required teaching or other duties. The work includes international collaboration, conference presentations, a research visit to BAS in Cambridge, UK, and collaboration with UiO. The successful candidate will also assist with operations and maintenance of the Svalbard SuperDARN radar near Longyearbyen.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant master’s degree completed by 31 January 2027, admission to a doctoral program at the University of Oslo, strong English skills, and solid mathematics/physics background. Programming experience with Python or MATLAB is required. Helpful extras include experience with SuperDARN/EISCAT data, FITACF, PyDARN, GUISDAP, RST, AI tools for large datasets, publications, teamwork, and polar field experience.

Funding: the position is funded as a PhD stipendiat role, with salary, a Svalbard allowance of NOK 44,640 per year, travel/relocation support up to NOK 10,000, staff housing under current regulations, and pension/insurance benefits.

Application deadline: 23 October 2026. Apply via Jobbnorge and upload the motivational letter, CV, transcripts/diplomas, and two references.
