About this position

PhD opportunity in iron photocatalysis for organic synthesis at the University of Murcia, Spain, in the Juliá Research Group supervised by Dr. Fabio Juliá.

The project focuses on developing new methods for sustainable organic synthesis using inexpensive and non-toxic first-row metal catalysts, with emphasis on ferroxalate photocatalysis, reductive iron catalysis, and new reactivity modes beyond photoredox.

This is a fully funded PhD position. The lab is based in the Pleiades-Vitalis Multidisciplinary Research Building and is described as fully equipped with GC-MS, HPLC, glovebox facilities, and spectrophotometers.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have an MSc in Chemistry or be close to completing one. Experience in organic synthesis, photocatalysis, radical chemistry, organometallic chemistry, and/or homogeneous catalysis is highly valued. The post also asks for creativity, teamwork, and ambition. Only European candidates are eligible because of administrative restrictions.

Application materials: CV with at least two references, academic transcripts, and a motivation letter.

Deadline: 1 October 2026, or until a suitable candidate is found. Start date: February 2026, flexible.
