About this position
The Martin Buber Professorship for Jewish Religious Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt is offering a PhD position as part of the LOEWE Center “Dynamics of Religion: Ambivalent Neighbourhoods between Judaism, Christianity and Islam in Historical and Contemporary Constellations.” This interdisciplinary research center, funded by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Research, Art, and Culture, brings together Goethe University Frankfurt, Philipps University Marburg, and Justus Liebig University Giessen to explore the complex religious, cultural, and political-social interrelationships between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam from both historical and contemporary perspectives.
The available PhD position is located within the subproject “Jewish Diasporic Concepts and Experiences of Multireligious Neighbourhoods in Confrontation with Modern Anti-Semitism,” supervised by Prof. Christian Wiese and Adjunct Prof. Stefan Vogt. The position is based at the Department of Protestant Theology (coordinating unit) at Goethe University Frankfurt and is funded for a fixed term from January 1, 2026, until December 31, 2029 (E13 TV-G-U, 65% part-time). The research will focus on Jewish religious philosophy, Jewish history, diaspora studies, and the dynamics of interreligious relations, with a particular emphasis on modern antisemitism.
Applicants should hold a strong academic degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Religious Studies, Jewish Studies, Theology, History, Philosophy, or related disciplines. Candidates are expected to demonstrate independent, theoretically grounded, and interdisciplinary research skills, as well as excellent English and good German language proficiency (or willingness to acquire German quickly). Additional language skills and methodological competencies relevant to the subproject are advantageous. The position offers integration into an international, interdisciplinary research environment, participation in a cross-university doctoral program, and opportunities for professional development and networking.
To apply, candidates should submit their application documents in a single PDF by email to [email protected] by January 9, 2026. For further details on the project and specific requirements, applicants are encouraged to consult the project website. For questions about the project, contact Prof. Christian Wiese ([email protected]) or Prof. Armina Omerika ([email protected]).
