PhD Position in Materials Chemistry for Chemical Recycling of Plastics at Stockholm University Stockholm University in Sweden

Stockholm University’s Department of Chemistry (Kemikum) is advertising a PhD position in Materials Chemistry focused on the chemical recycling of plastics. The project is hosted by the group of Kostas Parkatzidis and sits at the intersection of polymer science, catalysis, materials chemistry, and sustainable chemistry.

The doctoral researcher will work on the synthesis and characterization of polymer- and carbon-based materials and catalysts, study their catalytic activity using model molecules, and apply the results to plastic depolymerization and other sustainable chemical transformations. The broader aim is to develop energy-efficient methods that convert plastic waste into valuable chemicals and reduce the environmental impact of chemical production.

This is a good fit for candidates with a strong background in polymer chemistry, polymer engineering, polymer recycling, catalysis, or carbon materials, and especially for applicants motivated to learn and contribute to a new research group from the beginning.

Eligibility: applicants must meet the general and specific requirements for doctoral education at Stockholm University. Specific eligibility includes a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or physics, plus an independent advanced-level project of at least 30 credits (or equivalent knowledge). Strong English communication skills, initiative, independence, teamwork, and analytical thinking are emphasized in the selection process.
