About this position

PhD Position in Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

This PhD project sits at the interface of mathematics, statistics, and modern AI / machine learning. The research is primarily theoretical and aims to develop a rigorous understanding of modern learning algorithms, including how architecture and dynamics shape performance.

Computational experiments may be used to support conjectures and illustrate results, depending on the candidate’s interests.

The position is hosted in the Institut für Mathematische Statistik und Versicherungslehre / Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The successful candidate will join an active, supportive, inclusive, and collaborative research environment, collaborate with national and international researchers, and contribute to teaching as a teaching assistant.

Eligibility: applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a Master’s degree in pure or applied mathematics, theoretical physics, statistics, or a related field. A strong background in one or more of the listed mathematical areas is preferred. Good written and spoken English is required; German is not required. Programming experience is helpful but not mandatory.

Funding and conditions: the appointment is 100% for 4 years, with employment conditions and remuneration according to University of Bern standards. The annual gross salary for 2026 is CHF 50,042 for full-time employment, including the 13th month salary.
