About this position

Open PhD position at CEA-Leti, Grenoble, France on Multipath-aided Cooperative Simultaneous Localization & Mapping (R-SLAM), starting around Oct. 2026.

The project focuses on leveraging multipath radio signals exchanged between cooperative wireless devices to enable simultaneous localization and mapping in complex environments. The research aims to identify propagation-channel features across multiple radio links, estimate relative positions of mobile radio devices, and characterize surrounding scatterers. The work combines wireless communications, signal processing, machine learning, and robotics-oriented estimation methods.

Expected work includes studying the fundamental limits of cooperative multipath-based radio SLAM, analyzing candidate radio features for ML-based inputs, developing a sequential cooperative positioning approach, and exploring neural-network families such as physics-informed models, auto-encoders, memory-based methods, image-processing-oriented approaches, and generative approaches. The project also includes peripheral algorithms such as data association and data fusion, with validation on real measurements, ultra-wideband devices, indoor experiments, and simulated data.

Supervision is shared by Pr. Veronica Belmega (ESIEE – Université Gustave Eiffel & LIGM Laboratory), Dr.-Ing. Christophe Villien (CEA-Leti), and Benoît Denis (CEA-Leti), under academic direction from Pr. Veronica Belmega.

Candidate profile: MSc or equivalent (Bac+5) in signal processing and/or applied mathematics for wireless communication networks, telecoms, radio systems/technologies, with good knowledge of machine learning.

Funding: 2406 euros/month gross.

Application materials: CV, official transcripts from the last two academic years, and recommendation letter(s) or reference contacts. The post directs applicants to the linked description for full application modalities and to contact the supervisors by email.
