About this position

The Institute of Neuroscience at Université catholique de Louvain is offering a PhD position focused on the investigation of neurophysiological biomarkers associated with Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) response in patients with refractory epilepsy. VNS is an established adjunctive therapy for epilepsy, but its mechanisms and predictors of clinical response remain poorly understood. This research aims to identify and characterize biomarkers of vagal activation using advanced multimodal physiological recordings, including electroencephalography (EEG), evoked potentials, and pupillometry. The ultimate goal is to improve patient selection and optimize stimulation parameters for better therapeutic outcomes.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team and work under the supervision of Dr. El Tahry Riëm. The project will involve neuroengineering, clinical neuroscience, and advanced signal processing techniques, with a strong emphasis on programming (especially in Matlab) and electrophysiological data analysis. The research environment provides access to state-of-the-art facilities and collaborative opportunities within the Institute of Neuroscience.

Funding is initially secured for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension based on progress and available resources. To complete the full four-year PhD program, the candidate will be expected to apply for competitive doctoral fellowships from the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique – FNRS, such as the FRIA or Aspirant fellowships. The supervisor and research team will provide guidance and support throughout the fellowship application process.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) with distinction in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field. A strong interest in neuroengineering, clinical neuroscience, and epilepsy research is essential. Programming skills, particularly in Matlab, are highly desirable, and previous experience in electrophysiological signal processing is a strong advantage. Excellent written and spoken English is required, along with basic oral communication skills in French.

To apply, candidates should send their application to Dr. El Tahry Riëm ([email protected]), with a copy to [email protected]. The application should include a cover letter describing your interests, a resume, transcripts, and at least one recommendation letter. For further information, visit www.enlab.be.

The application deadline is June 30, 2026. The anticipated start date is between September and October 2026.
