PhD Position in Nutrition and Exercise Science at South Dakota State University (School of Health and Human Sciences) with Assistant Professor Samitinjaya Dhakal.

The lab studies how dietary patterns influence cognitive decline through a multi-omics approach. Research themes include metabolomics, microbiome analysis (oral and gut), personalized dietary strategies for brain health and prevention of cognitive decline, blood-based biomarkers using advanced assay techniques, and machine learning for high-dimensional omics data and predictive signatures.

This opening is for one more highly motivated PhD student to start in Summer or Fall 2026. The ideal candidate has a master's degree in a health- or science-related field (e.g., nutrition, dietetics, exercise physiology, public health), a strong interest in combining wet-lab and dry-lab computational techniques, and prior experience or strong motivation to learn Python and R. Because the work involves clinical studies, the PI is looking for someone comfortable working with human participants and demonstrating empathy and professional communication skills.
