About this position

PhD position in Offshore Groundwater Hydrology and Submarine Groundwater Discharge at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung (AWI), Germany.

This PhD project is part of the international JPI Oceans AQUA-SHELF consortium and focuses on offshore freshened groundwater (OFG), submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), and their connection to coastal groundwater systems. The work combines marine field campaigns, hydroacoustic mapping, environmental sensor deployment, sediment and pore-water sampling, geochemistry, isotope hydrology, and hydrogeological data integration.

The position is based at the AWI Wadden Sea Station on Sylt and includes collaboration with Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. Research periods at partner institutions and participation in joint marine expeditions are expected. The project aims to understand groundwater origin and age, freshwater–seawater mixing, recharge pathways, and whether offshore groundwater in the northern Adriatic is isolated or dynamically connected to modern coastal groundwater systems.

Eligibility: Master’s degree or equivalent in geosciences, hydrogeology, marine geology, environmental sciences, geochemistry, geophysics, or a closely related field. Applicants should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary marine and groundwater research, experience with fieldwork and/or geochemical or environmental datasets, and familiarity with methods such as hydroacoustics, marine geophysics, environmental sensors, sediment or pore-water sampling, isotope or hydrochemical analyses. Quantitative data analysis skills in R, Python, MATLAB, or similar software are desirable; GIS is an advantage. Very good English (around C1) is required; German is helpful but not mandatory.

Funding and conditions: The post is a PhD thesis position with employment conditions under the German public sector agreement (TVöD Bund). The posting mentions part-time suitability, flexible working hours, mobile working up to 50%, and standard employee benefits. No stipend amount is given.

Deadline: 15 October 2026, 12:09 UTC.

How to apply: Submit your application through the AWI recruitment portal. The posting also references the Euraxess job page for application access and further details. Contact: [email protected].
