The project focuses on battery modelling, electrochemistry, parameter estimation, optimisation, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The successful candidate will develop, parameterise, and validate physics-based electrochemical battery models for dynamic charging/discharging, starting with test cells under controlled laboratory conditions and later extending methods to electric-vehicle operating data.
Research tasks include improving impedance-capable and multi-particle model structures, combining time-domain and frequency-domain measurements, performing laboratory battery measurements, analysing experimental and time-series data, and assessing model accuracy under different operating conditions and dynamic load profiles. The role also involves documenting and publishing results, presenting at meetings and conferences, and collaborating with researchers working on battery experiments, ageing, and model-based charging strategies.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrochemistry, physics, applied mathematics, computational engineering, or a related field; strong numerical modelling skills; MATLAB and/or Python programming; experience with experimental data analysis; and practical experience with battery test equipment and test-cell assembly. Experience with sensitivity analysis, identifiability analysis, and optimisation is highly desirable. English at B2 level or above is required; German is optional.
Funding: paid doctoral position, TVöD-Bund pay group 13 at 75%, fixed term of 3 years, with year-end bonus and capital-forming benefits.
