About this position

The SUPER Doctoral Network, funded by Horizon Europe and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation, is offering a PhD position at Blanquerna – Universitat Ramon Llull. This opportunity is part of a pioneering initiative to radically rethink how physical activity and sports infrastructure can contribute to fighting climate change. The successful candidate will join a vibrant network of 17 fellows working at the intersection of sustainability and sports science, with secondment opportunities in industry and other European academic institutions.

The research project aims to develop guidelines for the planning, design, and management of low-impact and climate-resilient sports infrastructure. Key tasks include conducting a systematic literature review to examine decision-making processes from a sustainability perspective, identifying and analyzing best practices among facility promoters and managers, co-designing innovative architectural solutions with stakeholders, and engaging in the co-creation of a practical guide to reduce environmental footprint and enhance adaptability to adverse climate conditions.

As a PhD Fellow, you will be expected to publish scientific articles, present findings at national and international conferences, contribute to the wider SUPER project, and participate in educational activities within the department and consortium. The position offers a fee-free PhD registration and competitive funding: a monthly living allowance of €4010 (subject to country correction coefficient), mobility allowance of €710, and family allowance of €660 (if applicable), all subject to tax and contributions.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g., sustainability, urban planning, environmental science, sports science), demonstrate strong interest in sustainable architecture and urban design, and possess experience in participatory or citizen science methods. Excellent analytical and data management skills, as well as strong communication skills in Spanish and English, are essential. Collaborative skills and availability for full-time study starting October 2026 are required. Desirable qualifications include understanding Catalan and experience in sports facility design or environmental sustainability projects. MSCA eligibility conditions apply: candidates must not already hold a doctoral degree and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment.

The selection process is open, transparent, and merit-based, including eligibility checks, screening, and online interviews with a diverse and gender-balanced committee. For more information, contact Dr Sacra Morejon Torne. To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, Master’s degree certificate, and contact information for two references to [email protected] by April 10, 2026. All documents must be in English and clearly indicate the position applied for. Applicants are also encouraged to complete the diversity form if applying for multiple SUPER positions.

Information sessions will be held on March 23, 2026, to provide further details and answer questions. This is an excellent opportunity for motivated candidates interested in sustainable sports infrastructure, climate resilience, and interdisciplinary research within a leading European doctoral network.
