About this position

Open PhD Position in Regenerative AI and More-than-Human Design at Interdisciplinary Transformation University (IT:U), Linz, Austria.

Assistant Professor Iohanna Nicenboim is looking for 1 PhD student to join the More-than-Human Design and Regenerative AI research group. The project explores how AI development affects more-than-human communities by studying AI’s socio-ecological and material conditions through multispecies ethnography, design research, and art-led inquiry.

The research themes include: studying the impacts of AI on more-than-human communities; documenting how AI infrastructures reshape relations among humans, nonhumans, technologies, and environments; developing design- and art-led projects that support situated, regenerative, and ecological perspectives on AI; and building a network of More-than-Human Living Labs.

The position is on-site in Linz, Austria, with 30h/week employment for up to 4 years. The work includes qualitative and design-led fieldwork in Europe and the Global South, and there are opportunities to collaborate with the Ars Electronica ecosystem and international research partners.
