About this position
PhD opportunity in Responsible AI in Software Engineering Education at the Center for Industrial Software (CIS), Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Institute, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), based at the Sønderborg campus in Denmark.
This three-year PhD project is part of PREPARE — Pedagogical Alignment for Responsible AI in Software Engineering Education, a joint project between SDU and the IT University of Copenhagen. The work sits at the intersection of Computer Science, Education, Information Technology, and Software Engineering Education, with a strong focus on generative AI, classroom interventions, empirical studies, and design-based research.
The project investigates how software engineering students use generative AI, what they delegate to it, how they justify its use, and where student agency is preserved or lost. The PhD researcher will translate findings into practical teaching interventions, agency artifacts, practicum activities, assessment designs, and self-learning components, and will work with instructors and program leadership to implement and evaluate them in live courses.
Funding: The position is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and is a salaried PhD fellowship. The monthly gross salary including pension is 37,075 DKK, with possible adjustment for relevant postgraduate experience.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants should hold a master’s degree in software engineering, computer science, or a closely related field (education-related master’s degrees are also welcome), with a substantial thesis component, a strong grade average, documented independent scientific work, and excellent English. Experience with empirical methods, mixed methods, computing education research, constructive alignment, teaching, and generative AI tools is advantageous.
Application deadline: 30 October 2026 at 23:59 CET/CEST.
How to apply: Prepare the required documents in English and PDF format, including a motivated application, CV, degree certificates and transcripts, recommendation letters, grading-scale documentation, and any relevant publications. Upload the cover letter under “Cover letter,” the CV under “Resume,” and all other documents under “Miscellaneous documents” via the SDU application portal.
Location: Sønderborg, Denmark.
