About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Basel in the Sustainability Research Group within the Horizon Europe project FAIR4COMMUNITIES.

The project develops AI-driven tools for fair, human-centric, and grid-friendly energy sharing across Energy Communities and multi-community ecosystems. This PhD focuses on the societal dimensions of AI-enabled energy sharing, including acceptance, trust, perceived fairness, and participation.

The successful candidate will help develop a Societal Readiness Framework that integrates social, institutional, and regulatory considerations into AI-based energy-sharing tools. Research methods include quota-representative national surveys, semi-structured interviews, participatory workshops, and field experiments.

The role also involves collaboration with stakeholders such as technology developers, Energy Community organisers and members, and pilot sites across Greece, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. The work will contribute to user-centred dashboards and interfaces, and to evaluating usability, trust in AI-supported decisions, and perceived fairness.

Applicants should hold an MSc/MA in social sciences, psychology, or a related discipline, ideally with a sustainability focus. Strong quantitative research skills are expected; qualitative skills are desirable. Proficient English, strong academic writing, communication, and teamwork skills are essential.

The position is funded for four years, starting January 2027, with an initial one-year contract and extension subject to positive assessment. Applications must be submitted online by 2026-10-18.
