About this position

Doctoral Candidate / PhD position in the SPACE-MEL MSCA Doctoral Network at the University of Florence (Università degli Studi di Firenze), Italy.

This project sits at the intersection of biology, medical science, computational pathology, spatial single-cell omics, and melanoma research. The DC13 project focuses on mucosal melanomas (MuM) and aims to investigate microenvironmental and sub-clonal heterogeneity during progression, using spatial multi-omics, longitudinal tissue analysis, pseudotime modelling, and computational tools to identify spatial and cellular drivers of metastasis and treatment-induced relapse.

The PhD candidate will be based at the Advanced Bioimaging Research Center (ABiR), Department of Health Sciences, University of Florence, under the supervision of Prof. Daniela Massi. The host lab specializes in tumour microenvironment research and computational pathology in human tumour tissues, with access to advanced imaging and analysis platforms. The project also includes international secondments at SANOFI in Gentilly, France, and Diatech Pharmacogenetics S.r.l. in Iesi, Italy.

Funding: MSCA-DN support for 36 months, including living allowance, mobility allowance, and family allowance if applicable. This is a funded doctoral position, not a self-funded one.

Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree or equivalent in Biology, Medicine, Dentistry, Biotechnology, or a related field; applicants must not already hold a PhD. Strong interest in melanoma biology, tumour microenvironment, biomarker discovery, translational cancer research, histology/pathology, immunohistochemistry, omics, and computational analysis is expected. English proficiency is required, with proof via IELTS/TOEFL/Cambridge English or possible exemption in specific cases. The MSCA mobility rule applies.
